Famous for his collabs with YG, Ty Dolla Sign and Tyga, Mustard is a West Coast hip-hop producer we can’t get enough of. And not just because of his music, we love his style too! He shares his thoughts on style, sustainability and his favorite Black designer right now.
Dianne: Out of all these amazing items from your closet, which is your favorite and why?
Mustard: I have two favorites, both custom pieces that you and I collaborated on. The red, yellow, and white motocross pants from my American Idol performance with Nick Jonas, and the other pair were for the Savage x Fenty performance.
D: Yeah, whoever ends up with these custom pieces will be very lucky! Can you tell us why you decided to donate the proceeds of this sale to Destination Crenshaw?
M: I’ve worked with the councilman Herb Wesson for many years, and I love the work they do. As a LA native, I will forever support education, the arts and community-building here first.
D: Sustainability is a massive part of fashion right now, why do you think people should choose to shop second-hand?
M: I think people should buy things they love and buy for longevity. I’m a collector as well, and I choose to purchase quality pieces over fast fashion so that I can have them for a long time, as they retain value and character with age.
D: How would you describe your sense of style? What do you look for when you’re shopping?
M: I don’t think I look for one specific thing. If I like it and think it’s fresh I’ll buy it—no matter who the designer or what the hottest new thing is. I also try to avoid wearing something that I’ve seen before.
