Candace Bushnell's Closet Sale
As the bestselling author of "Sex and the City," the basis for the TV phenomenon of the same name that spawned 6 seasons on HBO, 2 moves, and the re-boot series "And Just Like That," Candace Bushnell has become a household name for all fashion lovers (and New Yorkers) alike.
Explore coveted pieces from her closet - including some she wore on the red carpet - and learn more about her style.
Behind Her Pieces
“There are a few pieces I wore to premieres of my TV shows and movies - the Miu Miu top that I wore to the ‘Sex and the City 2’ premiere, the Stella McCartney and the Ferragamo dresses I wore to ‘The Carrie Diaries’ premieres, and the recent Lanvin dress I wore to my one-woman show premiere in the summer of 2021. There’s quite a lot of vintage from the 90s, including a great pair of wooden Christian Dior shoes I bought in the South of France in the late 90s.”
Favorite “Sex and the City” Looks
“There are so many favorite looks from the show—too many to name her— but probably the newspaper dress and the nude dress. Another look that always stands out is from the first season when Carrie wore Lederhosen to a picnic in the park with the girls. It was a bit out there, but also very Carrie and very Patricia Field.”
Characters Who Reflect Her Style
“In the very, very beginning of SATC, it would’ve been Carrie Bradshaw. I was wearing a lot of Dolce & Gabanna and Tom Ford back then (mid-90s) and we were shooting the second episode of SATC when someone asked Darren how Carrie should dress. He pointed to me and said, ‘Like her!’
But the reality is that Carrie Bradshaw has her own particular style, reflected by the incredibly stylish Sarah Jessica Parker and the brilliant Patricia Field. My style is about what looks best on me and plays up my assets, which happen to be my legs. Of course, most of the time, since I work from home, my uniform is comfy pants, a comfy long-sleeved T-shirt, and a ratty old sweater. Also flip-flops.”

On Sex, Fashion, and Life in New York City
“There’s a huge amount of individual expression in fashion now, which is wonderful. There are no rules. Also, a lot of sequins and glitter, which I love. I adore showy, over-the-top clothes. ”
