Marie Kondo (the Japanese minimalism expert) hugely inspires Hong Kong-based actor, Nicola. She realized that her wardrobe wasn't sparking joy. So, she decided to only hang on to items that put a big smile on her face and embrace a more sustainable approach to fashion. "It’s like romance," she says, "when the relationship is over, I let go."
...but there’s no strict rule. "Sustainable", isn't just organic or eco-friendly brands, it's also about creating less waste and prolonging the life of garments. I choose good brands and good quality pieces and look after them so that they last. I think we can still look good while feeling good! My staples come from brands like Blaze Milano, The Frankie Shop, Remain Birger Christensen, Isabel Marant and Ganni, with shoes and bags from Dior and Bottega Veneta.
...to pick items that complement your personality and attitude, and then you'll be able to wear them over and over again. The longest-lasting piece in my closet is a beautiful pair of my mom’s Chanel earrings from the '80s. Also, cut out impulse shopping - always sleep on it! When an item sits unworn in your closet for more than a couple of years, you know it's time to resell.
...and where you live! Hong Kong's humid climate means I don’t need a large winter wardrobe. So I've streamlined my wardrobe down to 3 categories: Sport/active wear, urban daywear and cocktail outfits. For cocktails, I love voluminous dresses and skirts from Alexander McQueen, and Rotate has some fun pieces with sequins and cutout backs.
