Girl of the Moment: Kiri
Melbourne based art student Kiri has perfected that laidback Aussie look with an innovative twist on the classics; she keeps things casual, bringing accessories and detailing into play for a modern and eclectic feel.

Although individually the pieces in this outfit are quite casual, the combination is smarter, without being overly classic. Together they create an interesting balance. I tend to spot the pieces I’m going to buy in the shows, and then order them. It’s easier because not many Australian boutiques stock pieces I’m interested in... up until now, the fashion scene has been pretty conservative. Things are changing though. Fashion in Australia is much more accessible now, mainly thanks to younger generations.

I wear black trousers a lot and often go for vintage styles because I find the cut more flattering, perfectly fitting trousers are frustratingly hard to find. Although I buy vintage for the cut, it’s also for the quality of the fabric... it’s just not the same nowadays. With jeans especially, fabrics used to be more rigid and didn’t stretch like they do now – they might be more comfortable to wear, but their shape and longevity have been sacrificed. Vetements jeans are a good compromise as they're modern, but made with vintage material. I like my trainers to have a slightly dressy feel; these Golden Goose ones are classic in design but made from suede that’s been painted. They give the look that touch of sophistication.

Look 3: Uniqlo T-shirt, vintage trousers, Louis Vuitton sandals, Prada bag This outfit is universal, by which I mean it could easily be worn on a sunny day anywhere in the world. It’s ideal for holidays and I travel a lot, so I need to have comfortable clothes for getting around in. Subtle accessories are key to getting this kind of look just right. The statement bag and sport sandals lift the classic black trouser-white t-shirt combination, adding interest elements to the outfit without over complicating it.

This outfit is my take on a more formal look; the classic v-neck of the jumper and sporty yet smart bag worn across the body really blurs the lines between masculine and feminine. I’m really pleased that the idea of gender is being phased out of fashion. We can take our pick of men’s and women’s collections now. I wear lots of my boyfriend's clothes – we go shopping together for pieces we can both wear. Major brands are starting to incorporate this thinking into the way they develop and merchandise their clothing, resulting in more subtle silhouettes that are still every bit as accessible style-wise. Formal looks are a great starting point for experimenting.

This look is one of my favourites because it’s simple, easy and comfortable. It might not attract that much attention, but the details are what makes it special – I could easily wear it every day. The top looks like three overlapping shirts but it’s actually one piece – typical Comme des Garçons. This openwork tote bag is from Louis Vuitton’s Iconoclast collection, for which Karl Lagerfeld, Frank Gehry, Cindy Sherman, Marc Newson, Christian Louboutin and Rei Kawakubo reimagined some of the brand’s most famous creations. I love pieces like this because they highlight the details that make fashion fun and exciting.
