Today we’re getting to know the 3 entrepreneurs behind BY FAR: the accessories brand with a cult celebrity following. Read their views on sustainability, creativity and oh so much more.
Co-founder and CEO, Sabina simply wanted to create the kind of accessories inspired by the ‘90s and early ‘00s that every cool girl would fall instantly in love with. Mission accomplished!
How did the idea behind your brand come about?
Bulgaria is well-known for its shoe craftsmanship and when we visited a small family-run factory, it felt like destiny! The idea behind the brand was to make cool, comfortable shoes that make women feel like they can conquer the world.
What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in becoming a sustainable brand?
Sustainability has always been one of our top priorities. We’re constantly optimising material selection, design and production processes and looking for ways to neutralize our carbon footprint.
Where do you see the fashion industry in 10 years time?
I believe digital is a huge part of fashion’s future and it will be a key focus in developing the BY FAR experience. I’d like to see an industry with fair labour practices and realistic clothing sizes, and I hope quality will be valued over quantity once again.
As CMO and co-founder of BY FAR, Valentina started the brand with her twin sister Sabina and her best friend Denitsa, to create shoes and accessories designed for women by women.
What role has an all-female-founded brand played in your life and business?
We’re not just women, we’re a family. Being friends for over 15 years means we share the same vision, and nothing feels more natural than designing for women as we know what we need, want and love!
What does sustainability mean to you?
Being ethical and sustainable is an integral part of our business and our lives. I try to reduce my consumption in general, only buying things I’ll use for a long time and aiming to set a good example for my son.
What tips can you give us on taking a more mindful and ethical approach to fashion?
My best advice is 'buy less, choose well, make it last' and always do the 'cost per wear' maths. Instead of buying clothes based on impulses and trends, spend money on timeless pieces.
As Creative Director and co-founder, Denitsa's designs have a minimalist yet joyful approach to shoe and handbag design. She uses consciously sourced materials to create seasonless styles.
What factors do you consider when creating your shoe and bag designs?
BY FAR is about pieces you’ll love and cherish. We often get inspired by film and TV from the ‘80s and ‘90s and our moodboards combine films and objects that create a specific feeling.
What sustainable choices do you make in everyday life?
I try to support eco-friendly and sustainable brands. I also buy a lot of vintage and second-hand. Apart from fashion I avoid plastic wherever possible, and I prefer buying local, seasonal products.
How do you bring your creativity to the upcycling process and why is it so important?
Each material is unique which makes the process of upcycling so inspiring. You have to be so creative and precise to limit waste, but it’s always so satisfying to see how fashion’s ‘waste’ can be transformed back into a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece.
