The story of the Italian empire Bvlgari.
For the House of Bvlgari, it all began in Italy in 1884. This brand of luxury jewellery has been expertly gracing the world with jewels, watches and fragrances for over a century now. One of the sons of the Greek family who founded the brand used to craft precious pieces in silver. In 1880, the same son decided to move to Italy, where he sold his designs alongside Greek antiques reminiscent of his roots. Twenty years later, helped by his two sons, he opened another shop to showcase the brand's products. The luxury store was overwhelmingly successful, loved by the Roman aristocracy and film stars alike. In the 1950s, the brand turned a decisive corner and gave its designs a more personal and intimate style. After the death of the original founder, it was only natural for his sons to take over at the helm of the company. In 2012, the brand became part of the global group LVMH.
Bvlgari, legendary, inherently stylish pieces.
The style of Bvlgari's designs has changed over the years. At the end of the 19th century, the Neo-Hellenistic style prevailed with a blend of inspirations from Byzantine and Islamic art. Floral motifs became very popular. The 1920s saw the brand opt for a style which was oriented art deco. Pieces appeared which were more pared-down and geometric. Ten years later, diamonds and sapphires began to feature in the brand's prestigious designs. After the Second World War, budgetary restraints were in place and fewer gemstones adorned the jewels and watches. Influences at the time included Italian Renaissance and Greco-Roman styles. The famous Serpenti watch was designed in the 1940s, with a strap in the form of a snake. As always, the blend of creativity, style and artisanal craftsmanship found favour with customers.
