Today's offering features this elegant, high quality Zenith Art Deco watch, gifted by legendary Hollywood TV Anchor Ed Sullivan, with the original inscription on the back.

At the beginning of the vintage era, Zenith Watch Co. was one of the finest watchmakers in the world at the time and manufactured watches for sale primarily under its own name, but also through the finest retailers of the time. Some Zenith watches were sold by Tiffany & Co.

This watch was specially made for Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham, a prestigious New York retailer, along with Tiffany & Co. and Cartier. It bears the name of this prestigious house on its dial. Founded in 1810, this company is the oldest continuously operating jeweler in the United States; in 1962, it purchased Cartier's American operations.

The watch has a very classic and pleasing design with a Breguet numeral dial. Frankly, we had to buy it without being able to see the maker inside and thought there was a good chance it was a Patek Philippe, as its case and dial look very similar to some Patek references of the period.

It has all its original parts and is in excellent condition. We left the case unpolished as we received it. It comes with what appears to be the original bracelet and buckle; they were installed on it when we acquired it.

One of our watchmakers disassembled the movement (engine) down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled the movement making it ready for immediate enjoyment; otherwise, we left the rest of the watch untouched.

It comes with a certificate of authenticity and provenance from a well-known auction house.

Ed Sullivan:

Edward Sullivan, in addition to being an impresario, sports and entertainment reporter, and syndicated columnist for the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate, was best known as an American television personality. He was the creator and host of the television variety show The Toast of the Town, renamed The Ed Sullivan Show in 1955. Airing from 1948 to 1971, it set a record as the longest-running variety show in American broadcast history and ranked 15th on TV Guide's 50 Greatest Shows of All Time. “It was, in every way, the last great television show,” said television critic David Hinckley. “It’s one of our greatest and most cherished pop culture memories.”

Sullivan was a broadcasting pioneer in the early days of American television. As critic David Bianculli wrote: “Before MTV, Sullivan featured rock artists. Before Bravo, he featured jazz, classical music, and theater. Before the Comedy Channel, and even before The Tonight Show, Sullivan discovered, crowned, and popularized young comedians. Before 500 channels, before cable, Ed Sullivan was the go-to choice. From the very beginning, he was truly the talk of the town.” »

The Beatles' first appearance on the show, on February 9, 1964, was the most-watched program in television history to date, and remains one of the most-watched of all time.

Sullivan was known for prioritizing diversity on his show, programming many African-American artists and country music, when these genres were not yet covered on television.

These three watches are new and pre-owned, presented in photo shadow boxes.

A watch given a few years after the end of the Civil War by the Vice President-elect in honor of an Army major who later received the Medal of Honor recently sold.
