Hermès, the birthplace of legendary bags.
The epic story of French fashion house Hermès began back in 1837 with luxury horse-riding accessories. Working with leather is a major speciality of the brand and the designs quickly became highly sought-after items. The leather goods business grew and iconic bags saw the light of day. Today, Hermès bags are symbols of luxury and prestige and represent the stuff of dreams for women everywhere. Every design is associated with a beautiful story, making each piece truly unique.
Evelyne, the horse-rider's bag of choice.
At Hermès, everything revolves around the world of horses and the Evelyne design is no exception to that rule. We have Evelyne Bertrand, the then manager of the Equestrian division, to thank for this legendary design. In 1978, she created the design to meet a demand from horse riders who needed a bag in which to carry around their accessories (brushes, sponges, currycombs, etc.). The Evelyne bag is reminiscent of a horseshoe shape pierced with small holes so that air can circulate. A long strap means the carrier can wear it over their shoulder. In no time at all, women decided the design was perfect for them, too. The Evelyne design would eventually come out in four different formats.
Leather goods - ambassadors of luxury across the planet.
From the very first tall strap bag brought out in 1892 to the iconic Birkin bag designed in 1984, the list of classics from the House of Hermès is long and very impressive. Since it was founded over a century and a half ago, the French luxury brand has been behind iconic designs, which are now rare and very highly sought-after.
Becoming the owner of a Hermès bag is a labour of love. These most exquisite leather goods items are produced in limited quantities and cannot be found in stores. There is only one route for collectors to go down - they must use second hand networks. The following legendary handbags are available on Vestiaire Collective:
