Internationally, Longchamp is one of the best-known French houses today, thanks to its collections of bags and especially its Pliage bag, a symbol of elegance combined with functionality. The Pliage bag, a key member of the Longchamp family.
Jean Cassegrain founded the House in Paris in 1948. The label initially became famous under the name of Maison Cassegrain et Compagnie, and at the time it sold leather-covered pipes. Thanks to the prestigious nature of the leathers used and their meticulous finish, very early on Longchamp positioned itself in the luxury market. When Cassegrain's son Philippe took over the family business, he used the company's know-how to specialise in leather goods, and more specifically in travel bags. Forever seeking the perfect compromise between quality, durability and lightweight design, he combined several materials, like nylon and leather, and gave birth to the Xtra-bag, a revolutionary foldable bag aimed at globetrotters. In 1978, Longchamp launched the LM, its first ladies' handbag, made of brown and beige leather. From that moment on, the famous racehorse, the brand's logo, could be found stamped on all the different models, like the Veau Foulonné calfskin bag and the Derby collection.
It would not, however, be until 1993, with the launch of the famous Pliage bag that the Longchamp story would reach a turning point. Inspired by Japanese origami, the nylon bag with leather trimmings folds up in a trice and can be slipped with ease into wherever you want to keep it. Lightweight, solid, but also more affordable than the brand's other bags, the Pliage went on to be a best-seller. Other versions in different colours and sizes came out in quick succession. That same year, Longchamp created the very stylish Roseau bag, available in calf leather or crocodile hide, and carved an irrevocable place for itself in the world of French leather goods.
Bespoke bags.
Today, ladies' bags represent two thirds of the brand's sales. Far from limiting itself to handbags, Longchamp’s renown is built upon a wide range of items, including clutch bags backpacks and travel bags. Furthermore, the French House offers the possibility of personalising bags from its Pliage collection - a distinctive feature that has also contributed to their reputation. Bags can be carried by the handles, worn across the body or come in the form of a travel bag, and you can opt for a leather or nylon version and choose the colour, style of handle, lining and clasp. You can even personalise the bag to the extent of having your initials stamped on it.
Despite a classic design, the label has managed to maintain a modern style by collaborating with celebrities like Kate Moss, who played the role of both muse and designer for the House.
