Miyake’s patented post-construction pleating technique, developed w/ textile engineer Makiko Minagawa in the late 1980s, remains one of fashion’s most influential innovations, still coveted by gen z fans & industry insiders alike. The result: a heat-set polyester that retains its form & elasticity through years of wear. While pleated silks had existed before — most notably those of early 20th-century Venetian designer Mariano Fortuny — it wasn’t until Miyake’s launch of Pleats Please in 1993 that pleats became an accessible, everyday design language.
