Vintage Christian Dior “Claw’ brooch

An elegant 5cm “Claw” shaped tapered brooch set with a center trillion cut “topaz” or “sapphire”, the blue is not one exactly found in nature and this is because the costume gem itself is made by the famous Gripoix technique— a method of hand-pouring molten glass into intricate metal molds (process known as pâte de verre).  Although named after Augustine Gripoix , who revived and refined this technique, haute couture brands such as Christian Dior made the gems for their jewellery in this way as due to the process, the hand pouring of glass into a mold results in distinctive color, clarity, intensity and transparency- essentially in uniqueness in parallel to earth mined gems, yet allowing for the creation of colours not found in nature.

Each gem is made by and which is why there are slight variations in appearance, but all would have been checked for quality prior to being set and as the idea is to recreate the natural quality of earth mined gems, this is exactly why that method, although the most time consuming and expensive, is what Christian Dior and similar high end brands choose instead of mass produced cheap alternatives.


The blue Gripoix gem at the top of the “claw” is set off by a simple trillion shape of “diamonds”, which are complimented by the cluster at the curved point of the “claw” shape.

This could be worn on the lapel of a jacket, to fasten a scarf, or it could be worn as a pendant- perhaps on a black leather cord to create an edgy, modern look.

All gold plating is intact and this beauty is as it is in the photos.
