Timberland, from lumberjack boots to women's shoes.
Born on the other side of the pond, the House of Timberland started out making working boots. The brand whose logo is an oak tree has since found the perfect blend of performance, aesthetics and ethics, and has started designing ranges of shoes for women.
A pioneering brand of footwear.
The Timberland story revolves around an ambitious Russian immigrant by the name of Nathan Swartz, and embodies the American Dream. From his first steps as an apprentice shoemaker in 1918 to the acquisition of the Abington Shoe Company in 1955, his path was lined with success. When he retired, his descendants decided to improve on his shoes, the soles of which were hand sewn to the uppers. They placed their trust in injection moulding technology and high-performance Goodyear rubber. They persevered until they came up with the iconic yellow nubuck Timberland lumberjack boots in 1973. The Yellow Boot, which would subsequently be adopted by hikers and stars of hip hop alike, marked the start of a series of best sellers.
In 1979, the House of Timberland broadened its horizons and launched several designs of boat shoes. Gradually, the brand became a global reference in the outdoor footwear industry, due mainly to the Timberland 6-Inch, which has been revisited myriad times. Today, Timberland has positioned itself where performance and ethical trading meet, thanks to technological advances like the innovatingly comfortable Sensorflex soles and the Green Rubber recycling system. The latter gave rise to the Earthkeepers range in 2008, clothes and shoes made from materials that are recycled, ecological or environmentally-friendly.
Technology geared up to women, too.
Wanting to open up to the world of women's footwear, the House of Timberland gave its legendary yellow lace-up boots more elegant lines and dressed them in different colours and fanciful motifs. Many other designs for women, marrying comfort with aesthetics, made an appearance: women's trainers, roman sandals, heeled ankle boots and riding boots. These shoes incorporate a wide variety of materials, from traditional leather and velvet to canvas. Ever-present is the sole, a product of cutting-edge technology, unique to the brand.
With its know-how, Timberland has definitely won over the hearts of the public at large. The top spot of the list of must-have designs for women inevitably goes to the 6-Inch, adorned with bright colours or a floral motif, for example. Boat shoes, updated with a pastel hue or two-tone design, have established themselves as indispensable for those hot summer months. Finally, Timberland sandals, with cork heels, or flat, roman-type versions, can easily pair with any outfit.
