The story of the brand Adidas is inextricably linked to the story of its founder, Adolf Dassler. In 1920, he opened a workshop to make sports equipment because he was passionate about sport. Four years later, his brother joined him. Together they focused on creations which married performance, protection and durability. One brother brought his creative genius to the table and the other his business nous. In 1944, they would put an end to their collaboration but 5 years later Adolf officially launched the Adidas brand. The name comes from his nickname "Adi", together with the first few letters of his surname. His brother would go onto launch another leading sporting brand, Puma. For decades, high-level sports people would make a major contribution to raising awareness and garnering popularity for the brand as its notoriety grew. It was in the 1960s that the brand's most famous designs, the Stan Smiths, Superstars and Gazelles came out. With each new season, Adidas reinvents the different designs over and over again.
