Burberry, decidedly British luxury.
The Burberry brand conjures up the legendary check trench coat, gabardine and the famous age-old logo in the form of a knight. The history of the English House started in 1856. It was Thomas Burberry who founded the firm, his aim being to create clothes which were designed specifically for the less-than-reliable climate in the UK. That explains his subsequent invention of gabardine. The fabric is breathable and shower-resistant, which was a real innovation for the inhabitants of the island! The brand's success was well underway and over the years, the ranges have been extended to include full sets of clothing for men, women and children.
Iconic pieces from Burberry.
The brand's success began with the invention of gabardine. One other piece has become truly legendary: it is the Burberry trench coat. Manufactured during the First World War, it was designed to meet the needs of soldiers. It was not until 1920 that the check motif was used for the very first time. Today, the print is re-used every season in the different collections brought out by Burberry. The House has successfully preserved its original sources of inspiration whilst modernising its communication. A new Burberry logo, more graphic and up-to-date, was adopted in 2018 at the same time as a new house monogram.
