The secrets of an object *
This portrait pays tribute to the Pawnees, a tribe originating from the plains of Nebraska and Kansas, forced into exile on the Indian reservations of Oklahoma at the end of the 19th century. Lavishly dressed, Pani La Shar Pawnee holds a carved peace pipe depicting a galloping horse. His calm gaze and haughty bearing express the great dignity of his people. Peace pipes and bison heads adorn the corners of this composition, around which horses and riders, inspired by the notebooks of Karl Bodmer, race. The works of this 19th-century painter remain a precious testimony to Native American culture. Pani La Shar Pawnee is the first square designed by Kermit Oliver in 1984.

Ce portrait rend hommage aux Pawnees, tribu originaire des plaines du Nebraska et du Kansas, contrainte de s’exiler dans les réserves indiennes d’Oklahoma à la ﬁn du XIXe siècle.
