The brand of watches Audemars Piguet came into being in Jura in Switzerland in 1875. Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet, two former classmates, were behind the decision to launch the company initially. The main objective back then was to create watches equipped with innovating technologies and to identify and prepare for future trends before their rivals. With the advent of the First World War, business slowed down considerably and the founders lost their lives in 1918 and 1919 respectively. Thereafter, their sons kept the brand going and raised its prestige. The process was helped along in no small way by collaborations with Cartier and Tiffany & Co. Since its creation, Audemars Piguet has developed certain designs which have now become iconic. That is the case of the famous Royal Oak designed in 1972, which was a precursor of current designs with its octagonal form and steel construction.
