The brand Sacai was founded by Chitose Abe in Japan in 1999. The founder initially worked for Comme Des Garçons, the famous brand founded by Rei Kawakubo, before branching out on her own. The personal venture came about mainly through the designer's wish to preserve her independence and precious sense of freedom. She started out knitting sweaters by hand before completing her women's wardrobe with a range of other pieces. Blending different shapes and materials is a real hallmark, and the clothes have an authentic, artisanal look all her own. The name of Sacai comes from the founder's mother's name.
