A young man called Louis Vuitton from the Jura region founded his eponymous brand in Paris in 1854, after learning his craft with a trunkmaker. Taking advantage of the development of river and rail transport, Vuitton invented the flat-topped trunk, which was much more practical for stacking. In 1888, the chequered brown and beige pattern was created as a way of preventing counterfeits. Still instantly identifiable today, the motif featured alongside another just as iconic created in 1896 - the LV Monogram, initially applied to coated canvas. The print, which still adorns most Louis Vuitton ladies' bags has also become the emblem of the French leather goods maker, a symbol of quality, practicality and durability.
With stars for muses, including Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson, the Parisian fashion house is one of those internationally acclaimed brands, creating ambitious and often award-winning campaigns, full of inspiration. Initially specialising in trunks, the House of Vuitton expanded its business to leather goods of all descriptions, creating ranges of women's handbags, clutches, rucksacks and wallets. The monogram that made the label famous features on most of the models, with 30 different colours being available, from the classic brown-beige to more vivid hues. Smooth patent leather, taurillon leather, but also crocodile, python and ostrich skin: the historic pattern can now be found on a multitude of noble materials.
