When she founded Comme des Garçons in the 1980s, Rei Kawakubo wanted her brand to stand out from the norms of the fashion world at the time. She deliberately called into question all reigning criteria relating to beauty and aesthetics at that point. Her silhouettes were androgynous, the lines clean-cut and the asymmetric and disproportionate style of the pieces was highlighted. The Japanese designer did not draw inspiration from the latest fashion trends and she actively looked to distance herself from them in order to construct a style all her own.
